An ancient temple of Lord Siva Senchadai Appar and Ammai Periya Nayagi. Thirugnagna Sambandar sang padigams. Brahman, Thirumal,Indran, Iravatham, Agathiyar, Suriyan, Chandran, Aadhi Shesan, Sumathi (Vasuki`s daughter), Naga kannigai, and Thadagai Prattiyar prayed here and were blessed by Lord Siva.
In the epic period, a noble woman,Thadagai Prattiyar worshipped Siva here daily. She usually fetched flowers made garland and garlanded Siva herself. Once while garlanding Siva, her (saree) shawl glided down and she felt shamed. She prayed to Siva. Siva bowed his head towards her arms. Much worried about this incident, she prayed again to Siva to give her sixteen arms.
Siva offered her sixteen arms. But the bent head of Siva remained like that. Years passed by. A Chola King who ruled Palayar heard this incident and came to Thiruppanandhal. He tied ropes on (Siva) Lingam and drove the horse to straighten the bend of "Panam." But it did not work out well. The king was tired and went away.
A devotee of Siva at Thirukkadaiyur who did kungiliyam(sambrani) pooja at the temple ("hence named as kungiliya kalayana nayanar") heard all these incidents and came from Thirukkadaiyur. He did poojas and prayed to god. He tied the flower garland to the "Panam and the other end on his neck. He began to move on the opposite side of Siva. Now Siva felt disturbed. Siva had to stretch his head straight by or the Nayanar be forced to die. Moved by his love, Siva slightly straightened from the rope tied part. This incident is described in Sekkilar’s Periya Puranam beautifully.
